Dr. Carolyn Clay
Dr. Carolyn Clay is a native of Richmond, Virginia, who graduated from Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech in 2004. She has been a part of the Church Hill Animal Hospital team since its beginning in 2003. Dr. Clay has also worked for a small animal/exotic practice, 24-hour general/emergency practice. In 2015 she started Animal and Exotic Veterinary Services, a house-call practice.
Dr. Clay’s many veterinary medicine interests include general medicine and surgery, dentistry, laser therapy, exotic pets, and senior care. She is passionate about helping clients find honest, practical treatments that work for them and their animals. Dr. Clay is an advocate for homeless animals. She has fostered and adopted many stray animals over the years. Dr. Clay also volunteers at the Richmond Wildlife Center as a veterinarian and board member.
She lives in Montpelier with her husband and two teenage children and their various rescued pets, including three dogs, four cats, a rabbit, and some fish. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, hiking, camping, and spending time with friends and family in the mountains of Augusta County. She also serves as an adult leader of her daughter’s scouts BSA troop.
Dr. Karen Manuel
Dr. Karen Manuel has been practicing veterinary medicine for over 30 years. She first showed interest in becoming a veterinarian as a young girl as she grew with a father that loved all animals. Dr. Manuel also got her entrepreneurial spirit from her dad, a blacksmith and a welder who had his own business. She attended North Carolina State College of Veterinary Medicine as an NC resident growing up in Winston-Salem. She moved to Richmond at the time of graduation to take her first job as a veterinarian. She has been a house call vet for the past 27 years before becoming an owner of Church Hill Animal Hospital. She has known Dr. Nan Jack since before the inception of Church Hill Animal Hospital in 2003. Providing the best possible care to pets as well as establishing a long-term relationship both with the pets and their owners is her primary goal.
Dr. Manuel spends lots of time traveling to NC to help care for her aging mother. She also enjoys spending time with friends, traveling all over the US and the world, supporting the local community by enjoying the restaurants, breweries, wineries, local festivals, and really anything Richmond! Dr. Manuel shares her home with her three kitties, Rusty (18-years-old), Maddy (17-years-old), and Marshmellow, a very young one (9-years-old). She is looking forward to growing Church Hill Animal Hospital into an even more progressive, community-oriented practice.
